Strengthening Digital Literacy in Eastern Indonesia

Digital literacy remains a crucial need among communities across Indonesia. Since 2021, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) has made digital literacy one of its national priorities. However, several regions in Eastern Indonesia, including Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), have yet to receive sufficient focus. According to research by KataData, Eastern Indonesia ranks the lowest in terms of communication and collaboration skills, digital security awareness, and technological proficiency compared to the western and central regions of the country. Responding to this gap, Kolaboraksi Pijar Nusantara Foundation (KPN), together with LSPR Institute of Communication and Business (LSPR Jakarta), initiated a Digital Literacy Training for Teachers at SMAK St. Layola, Labuan Bajo – Manggarai, NTT, using a Training of Trainers (ToT) model.

Training of Trainers: Building Teachers as Digital Literacy Facilitators

This program adopted the Training of Trainers (ToT) approach, where facilitators from KPN and LSPR guided teachers in understanding and applying the four official digital literacy modules developed by Siberkreasi and Kominfo. The four modules covered are Digital Ethics, Digital Safety, Digital Skills, and Digital Culture. Through this approach, teachers were not only trained as participants but also as future digital literacy facilitators in their schools. They are expected to share their knowledge with students and the wider school community, expanding the program’s long-term impact.

Implementation, Feedback, and Early Impact

In addition to implementing the national modules, the program also aimed to assess the effectiveness of the ToT modeland gather direct feedback from teachers as participants. Facilitators noted high enthusiasm and engagement, especially during discussions on digital security, media literacy, and online ethics. Early results indicated a positive shift in teachers’ understanding and skills in using technology safely and effectively. The feedback also provided valuable insights for designing future adult learning and digital literacy programs tailored for educators in remote areas.

Collaboration for Inclusive Education

Through this initiative, Kolaboraksi Pijar Nusantara and LSPR Institute reaffirm their commitment to expanding digital literacy access in Eastern Indonesia. This program goes beyond technology—it empowers teachers to build confidence, awareness, and a sense of responsibility in navigating the digital world. With its core values of Compassion, Knowledge, and Collaboration, Kolaboraksi Pijar Nusantara continues to develop programs that bridge education, technology, and social empowerment, fostering an inclusive and resilient society in the digital era.
